There are three types of delegates:
- District - become delegates when they fill out the registration form. They elect delegates to the state and national conventions
- State - are elected from their congressional district to serve at state conventions. State delegates will elect delegates to the national convention
- National - are elected at the district or state conventions to serve at the national convention

Here are some 2008 dates you will need to know:
- March 1 - Registration form becomes available on the DPO website
- April 29 - Last day for an Oregonian to register as a Democrat and participate in the primary election and the delegate selection process
- May 20 - presidential primary
- May 22 - filing deadline to run for delegate
- June 7 - congressional district conventions
- June 21 - state convention
- Aug. 25-28 - Democratic National Convention
