News

Organization Committee Update

A big thank you goes out to Jennifer Warren, who has been our Organization committee chair for the last four years. Her hard work, enthusiasm, and dedication helped put us on the map and has made our county an important political destination. Barbara Maloney is the new chair and here is her update.   The Organization Committee is establishing a Progressive Book Sharing Program. There is a new bookshelf at the office in Beaverton . We are now accepting donations of books for our collection. Books may be brought to the Central Committee Meeting each month, or taken to the office any time. Excess books will be returned to the owner or donated to the Beaverton Library. If you would like your books returned, please leave them with an identification label. People may borrow books from our progressive library and we will use the honor system and a sign-out sheet posted neat the bookshelf.  The Training Committee will offer two PCP training programs in November.

  1. Our regular PCP 101 will be offered for the last time this year on November 14. in the evening.
  2. Our regular PCP 102 training will be offered on Saturday, November 17 in the afternoon.
  3. We are offering a special “super training combination” 101/102 all in one day for experienced PCPs.

Program Ad Space

Now you can advertise in the Neuberger Banquet program!  This not only helps us underwrite our costs for the event but is a great way to promoteyour candidacy or your business to our attendees.  Deadline is Nov. 2.   For further information contact Sue Castner at   SCast100@aol.com

Business card-sized ads in the program are $50 and will include a link on the webpage through the end of the year. For more information contact - WomenVote2008@yahoo.com

Preferred seating for Early Neuberger Registrants

Want to sit with your friends at the Banquet?  Have the best tables up front?  You have two choices:  purchase a Patron Table for 10 (and divide up the seats between you and your friends), or simply register early and we'll pre-assign you the best table available.
For the first time, we'll be assigning tables as the registrations come in.  You may specify on your registration form (written or online) the friends you wish to sit with and, as long as they register as well, we'll do our best to seat you together at one table -- at the best table possible. The best way to ensure this is to purchase a patron table (no extra charge) and give us the names of all of your attendees at once.  But if that is not possible, go ahead and get your own registration in and encourage your friends to do the same as soon as possible.  Just be sure to give us the names of everyone at your table.
Remember, it's first registered, first assigned, so don't delay.

Bubbles with Barbara

Enjoy Argyle Winery's sparkling wine and delectable hors d'oeurvres, have your photo taken with former Governor Barbara Roberts and enjoy first pick of the silent auction items!  The special champagne reception takes place at 5:30, an hour before general admission to the Neuberger Banquet and is only $25 more per ticket.  This is a way to honor the accomplishments of this remarkable lady and put a few more dollars into the Washington County Dems' "Peace Chest."
Please sign up online at www.washcodems.org today!

Win a Weekend at the Coast

Take your pick-- a weekend at a beautiful secluded beach house in Seal Rock during Newport Seafood and Wine Festival (February 22-24, 2008), or on another 3-day weekend of your choice.  That's the grand prize of the raffle drawing at the Neuberger Banquet.  Other raffle prizes include Terry Hunt pottery and bottles of Oregon wine.

Although prizes will be drawn at the banquet, we'll begin selling raffle tickets for $5 each and 3/$10 at October's central committee meeting.  You can pay for your tickets by cash, check or credit card. Why not register for the banquet at the same time!

We need a bigger meeting place!

Washington County Democrats are looking for a new location for our monthly central committee meetings. We are rapidly outgrowing the space at our current location and anticipate even larger crowds in the coming election year.
The new space should be centrally located in the county (Beaverton, Tigard, Aloha areas), have ample parking and seating space for 100-150 people.Kitchen facilities are a plus.
Please contact Karen Packer at karen.packer@gmail.com if you have leads or wish to be involved in the search committee.

"

Stop 49" Spokespeople Hide True Development Plans and Lie About Impacts of Measure 49

Dear Mike,

Opponents of Measure 49, some of whom are asking for up to 140 homes, issued a glossy 8-page brochure to Oregon voters this week making hysterical and often patently false claims about the effects of Measure 49.

Among the most egregious lies --

CLAIM: The Netters say: "If Measure 49 passes, we'll lose the value of our property.  We want to see the tradition go on... we want to farm."
WHAT THEY'RE NOT TELLING YOU: The statement is patently false. The Netters filed a Measure 37 claim for a 60-lot housing subdivision on their 98 acres of exclusive farm use land.  The state denied the subdivision because the land was already protected farmland when Fred Netter acquired in 1977.  Under Measure 37 they area allowed up to 3 houses--Measure 49 would preserve these rights.

CLAIM: Marla Robison says in the brochure: "Measure 49 is about stopping us from passing our property rights on to our grandchildren."
WHAT THEY'RE NOT TELLING YOU: The opposite is true. Measure 49 specifically allows property owners to pass development rights on to their grandchildren, which is not allowed currently (by Measure 37). Marla Robison has proposed an 18-home subdivision, but her property was zoned agricultural when she bought it. Now she's trying to create 2 homes--which Measure 49 would allow.

CLAIM: The Laraways say in the brochure: "If Measure 49 passes, our whole way of life -- as farmers -- as we know it, would be gone."
WHAT THEY'RE NOT TELLING YOU: The Laraways have filed Measure 37 claims to build 144 housing units on their farm land: 42 houses on 10.5 acres, 70 multi-family units on another 10.5 acres, 26 houses on another 26 acres, and 6 units on another 34-acre parcel.

CLAIM: The Currys say in the brochure: "If Measure 49 goes through...we won't have anything left at all. Measure 49 would just take it all away."
WHAT THEY'RE NOT TELLING YOU: No property would be taken away under Measure 49. The Currys are trying to build a 110-home subdivision on their property even though their voters' pamphlet statement says they just want homes for their kids and grandkids. Measure 49 would allow them between 1 and 10 homes.

CLAIM: Ollie Wilcox says in the brochure: "If Measure 49 passes we will lose all our rights - not only our rights, but our children's and grandchildren's."
WHAT THEY'RE NOT TELLING YOU: Measure 49 won't take the Wilcoxes' rights away. She has proposed a 16-home subdivision on 8 acres of rural land. Measure 49 will allow her between 1 and 10 homes, and will specifically give the same rights to her children and grandchildren--rights they don't currently have under Measure 37.

CLAIM: Jennifer Helberg says of her mother, Mary Holtan: "If Measure 49 passes it means my mom can't retire. Under Measure 49, families like ours have to go back to square one and even then we're not assured of any rights...I'm worried about her...we all are. The farm is all she has."
WHAT THEY'RE NOT TELLING YOU: Mary Holtan has applied to have one lot divided into 3 parcels and a second lot divided into two - Measure 49 would allow both.

CLAIM: The Bitzes say in the brochure "We told our kids we would give our property to them...We'd like to keep our farm for future generations."
WHAT THEY'RE NOT TELLING YOU:  Measure 49 will allow property rights to transfer to an owner's children, which Measure 37 does not. But the Bitzes don't need it: under current zoning (without Measure 37), Jerald Bitz can divide his property into seven lots.

Why Healthy Kids Oregon Matters

Yes on Measure 50!

Measure 50 on the November 6, 2007 ballot will guarantee health care for 100,000 uninsured Oregon children and strengthen tobacco prevention programs through an 84.5 cent per pack increase in the state’s cigarette tax matching our neighbors to the north in Washington State.

There are currently more than 100,000 Oregon children whose working parents earn too much to qualify for the existing Oregon Health Plan but too little to afford private health insurance on their own.

The Healthy Kids Campaign is rolling up endorsements every day throughout the state. Here are some of the latest.

The Oregonian

"Oregonians have shown many times that they have heart. This newspaper urges voters to tap into that generous spirit once again and say yes to Measure 50 on the November ballot." -- The Oregonian

To see The Oregonian's video endorsement of Measure 50, click here.

Salem Statesman-Journal

"But in choosing between tobacco companies and children's health, it should be an easy decision for voters. The $10 million anti-Measure 50 campaign is one of the best reasons to vote for Measure 50." -- Salem Statesman-Journal

Medford Mail-Tribune

"At the center of any debate about this should be the kids. Oregon has 117,000 not covered by health insurance." -- Medford Mail-Tribune

The Willamette Week

"... if this measure insures only one additional kid and reduces the number of smokers, it will be worth supporting." -- The Willamette Week

Portland Tribune

"Oregonians should reject an onslaught of cynical tactics being utilized by the tobacco industry and instead approve ballot Measure 50 …" -- Portland Tribune

Ashland Daily Tidings

"We wholeheartedly endorse it because if you look up common sense in the dictionary, this measure is exhibit A." -- Ashland Daily Tidings

Corvallis Gazette-Times

" When it comes to care of our lower-income children, we are facing an emergency." -- Corvallis Gazette-Times

Daily Astorian

"The benefits of the additional tobacco tax revenues applied to uninsured children outweigh concerns about amending the state Constitution." -- Daily Astorian
Members of Oregon's Congressional Delegation Urge Oregonians to Solve the Child Health Care Crisis Now by Voting Yes on Measure 50

Recently, Congressman Earl Blumenauer and Congresswoman Darlene Hooley held a press conference in Portland to angrily denounce President Bush's veto of SCHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program), voice disappointment at the failure of Thursday's override vote, and call on Oregonians to take matters into their own hands and solve the crisis of uninsured children in Oregon by voting yes on Ballot Measure 50.

Listen to Congressman Earl's statement here.

Congresswoman Hooley expressed frustration over Congress' inability to override the President's veto and voiced her support for the Healthy Kids Initiative. "It comes down to what kind of a society we want to be. Do we want to pull out all of a child's teeth once they've rotted, or do we want to make sure that child gets to see a dentist for check-ups to begin with?"

Representatives of a variety of child and health advocacy organizations were in attendance to show their support, including the American Cancer Society, Parent Teachers Association, Children's Institute, and Oregon School Based Health Care Network.

Congressman Blumenauer noted that millions of dollars are being spent on misleading campaign ads by Tobacco companies to oppose Measure 50 . "We've got an opportunity with the passage of Measure 50, that we at least can see through the smokescreen, that we at least can do something in Oregon, " he said.

Congressmen Peter Defazio and David Wu, though unable to attend the press conference, joined their colleagues by issuing a statement which also called on Oregonians to vote yes on Measure 50.

Statement by OCPP Policy Analyst Janet Bauer on House Failure to Override CHIP Veto
Last Thursday was a sad day for thousands of uninsured children in Oregon and millions across the country. The U.S. House of Representatives failed to override President Bush's veto of the bipartisan Children's Health Insurance Program Act of 2007.
We commend Oregon Representatives Earl Blumenauer, Peter DeFazio, Darlene Hooley, and David Wu for standing alongside the nation's most vulnerable children.
We are disappointed that Representative Greg Walden voted against the override. The children in his district deserved better. For their sake, we hope that in the future he will reconsider his opposition.
Oregonians demand health care for their children. Every day, more children join the ranks of the uninsured -- a shocking reality that Representative Walden and the White House simply can't will away.

The Oregon Center for Public Policy is a non-partisan research institute that does in-depth research and analysis on budget, tax, and economic issues. The Center's goal is to improve decision making and generate more opportunities for all Oregonians.

Precinct Leader List updated on the website

Our fearless IT leader, Scott Sanders, has updated the PCP list on the website. You need to signup for an account on the website to access the PCP pages. We will be updating it each month in order to keep it up to date with the new PCPs. There is also an excel spreadsheet version that can be downloaded from the site.

Finally! An easy way to find your Precinct number!

Students at the PCP classes have been hounding me for this, and it took a bit if calling around and asking several people at the County Elections Office, but I finally found a pretty simple way to determine a voter's Precinct Number:
http://washims.co.washington.or.us/gis/intermap/
It's the September "Feature of the Month" (click on the iceberg!) and it's in the Precinct Leader Info section too.
Go to the site, enter a residential address and sift thru the listed info, about midway you'll find the Election Precinct for that address. Happy hunting!
