Click on a title to jump to the story below.
We have a lot going on this fall including 2 very important ballot measures needing support. There is an important action alert on SCHIP to expand health care coverage to 4 million more children (Bush has vetoed it - I find this just outrageous). Our biggest event of the year, the Neuberger banquet is also coming up, you can register online by following the link above.
We welcome your story ideas and are very interested in your letters and opinions. We also need articles for our quarterly Grassroots newsletter (150 words approx). Email us at webmaster@washcodems.org.

WashCo Dems Update
News
Come to the WashCoDem Canvass for Measures 49&50
We will meet at the WashCo Dems office on Saturday the 20th, at 9:30 am.
Tribute to State Senator Ryan Deckert
State Senator Ryan Deckert has recently announced that he will not be running for another term in the senate. When I first moved to Oregon 11 years ago, Washington County was a major republican strong hold. Ryan Deckert was the only democrat from our party in the state house. It was pretty lonely back then. Ryan Deckert really blazed the trail for us and showed us what was possible in Washington County . It is the success of one person often that gives you the inspiration to believe, Ryan Deckert provided that for us. The growth over the last few years has been incredible, now most of our Washington County representatives are democrats. His success sparked our awakening, and for that I am deeply grateful and wish him all the best in his continued service to our state. Thank you Ryan!

If the developers, timber companies and property rights ideologues teaming up to defeat Measure 49 have their way, Oregon's farms and forests will be converted into massive subdivisions and strip malls -- but at least people will 'get to do what they want with their land...'
People start voting two weeks from today. We must get word out about the importance of passing Measure 49 in protecting the state we call home.
Measure 37 developers fund opposition campaign
Businesses associated with huge Measure 37 development claims are pouring money into the No on 49 campaign. Stimson Lumber -- which has 131 claims for housing development on over 108,000 acres of forestland -- has already contributed $200,000.
$100,000 donations have been made by timber companies and private property advocates who want to keep Measure 37 at any cost.
Four companies that have given a combined $50,000 are headed by Philip Davidson, president of Davison Industries -- which has filed 42 development claims to convert Oregon forests into housing. No on 49 ads are flooding the radio and TV in every corner of the state.
But we can still win. Our campaign is getting the truth out about Measure 37 in messages like this on television and radio ads.
We cannot afford to let Oregon be sold to the highest bidder - can you help? Make a donation to Yes on 49.
October is here - time to turn out the vote for Measure 49
Ballots are mailed and Oregonians start in just two weeks - if we're going to protect our farms, forests, and water by fixing the flaws of Measure 37, we need to reach out to voters across the state, tell them what's at stake, and get them to mail their "yes" vote in.
Talking to voters is more important in this election than most -because it's a short statewide ballot, many voters don't even realize we have an election in four weeks. We can't afford to let our supporters skip this election - so volunteers are talking to their own neighbors, telling them what's at stake, and turning them out.
We need your help - volunteer for Measure 49 and help us make sure we protect the Oregon we love.
Vote early and help pass Measure 49!
Early voting is critical to winning the election! If you vote early, we can focus on reminding voters that might not mail in their ballot.
Please commit to be a Voter 49er -- which means that you'll vote and mail in your ballot within 49 minutes of receiving it this October.
Voting early is easy - AND it makes a big difference.
Click here to pledge to be a Voter 49er and use our "invite a friend" tool to get your friends and family to vote early and help protect the state.
More lawn signs available
Due to popular demand, more Yes on 49 lawn signs are now available. Find a distribution point near you. (some are available at our WashCoDems office).

Why Healthy Kids Oregon Matters
Yes on Measure 50!
Measure 50 on the November 6, 2007 ballot will guarantee health care for 100,000 uninsured Oregon children and strengthen tobacco prevention programs through an 84.5 cent per pack increase in the state’s cigarette tax matching our neighbors to the north in Washington State.
There are currently more than 100,000 Oregon children whose working parents earn too much to qualify for the existing Oregon Health Plan but too little to afford private health insurance on their own.
A simple majority vote of Oregonians can provide access to the kind of health care our children deserve while saving taxpayers money in reduced tobacco-related health costs and expensive emergency room visits by the uninsured for routine medical care.
A broad coalition of dozens of mainstream community leaders have united behind this common-sense plan, a partial list is below (for full list go to our “About Us” page):
American Cancer Society
Oregon PTA - Parents and Teachers Association
Oregon Business Association
Oregon State Fire Fighters Council
American Lung Association of Oregon
Children First for Oregon
Oregon Medical Association
American Heart Association
Stand For Children
Oregon Pediatric Society
Oregon Nurses Association
On the other side? Big Tobacco, an industry that has spent tens of millions of dollars trying to defeat similar measures in other states and target our children as their next generation of customers.
A “Yes!” vote on Measure 50 will increase state revenue by an estimated $386 million over the next four years to provide health care for children and low-income adults, and double the amount of money available for proven tobacco-prevention programs. (http://healthykids-oregon.org/)

Statement by Janet Bauer, OCPP Policy Analyst, on President Bush’s Veto of the Bipartisan Kids’ Health Insurance Bill
(Silverton) - President Bush has turned his back on the millions of children across the country who lack health insurance by vetoing a bipartisan bill to reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
Now all eyes in Oregon are on Representative Greg Walden, the only member of Oregon ’s congressional delegation to vote against the compromise bill crafted by the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. Representative Walden voted against the compromise, even though it dropped the Medicare provisions he had objected to in a previous version of the bill.
The House is expected to take up a vote to override the veto next week. In order to override, no more than 25 of the representatives who voted against the compromise bill would need to change their stance. Already some previous “no” voters have declared their intention to switch and vote to override the veto.
OCPP hopes that Representative Walden will turn away from the president’s irresponsible action and reach out to the thousands of uninsured children in Oregon by voting to override the veto.
The Oregon Center for Public Policy is a non-partisan research institute that does in-depth research and analysis on budget, tax, and economic issues. The Center's goal is to improve decision making and generate more opportunities for all Oregonians.
Representative Walden's contact information can be found at: http://walden.house.gov/index.cfm

Precinct Leader List updated on the website
Our fearless IT leader, Scott Sanders, has updated the PCP list on the website. You need to signup for an account on the website to access the PCP pages. We will be updating it each month in order to keep it up to date with the new PCPs. There is also an excel spreadsheet version that can be downloaded from the site.
Finally! An easy way to find your Precinct number!
Students at the PCP classes have been hounding me for this, and it took a bit if calling around and asking several people at the County Elections Office, but I finally found a pretty simple way to determine a voter's Precinct Number:
http://washims.co.washington.or.us/gis/intermap/
It's the September "Feature of the Month" (click on the iceberg!) and it's in the Precinct Leader Info section too.
Go to the site, enter a residential address and sift thru the listed info, about midway you'll find the Election Precinct for that address. Happy hunting!
