Upcoming Resolutions

Resolutions submitted by the Platform and Resolutions Committee for consideration by the Central Committee of the Washington County Democrats, with first readings on February 28, 2007

A Resolution Pertaining to Due Process Rights

Whereas the United States Constitution guarantees detailed due process rights to any person held in custody by any public authority existing by reason of said constitution, and

Whereas protection of these due process rights is a key responsibility of the citizenry’s elected and appointed officials,

Therefore, the Central Committee of the Washington County Democrats affirms its expectation that our elected and appointed officials shall ensure that all persons held in custody by any public authority existing by reason of the United States Constitution receive their constitutionally mandated due process rights and that protection of these due process rights shall be a matter of the highest priority for all said officials, regardless of their other responsibilities.

A Resolution Pertaining to Iran

Whereas reduction of the level of hostilities in the Middle East and the extrication of U.S. forces from active involvement in Middle Eastern hostilities are both much to be desired, and

Whereas American casualties in Iraq as a result of either direct or indirect Iranian action might be a politically expedient pretext for widening the war in the Middle East and prolonging the occupation of Iraq, and

Whereas continuing the American occupation of Iraq increases the danger of U.S. casualties as a result of either direct or indirect Iranian actions,

Therefore, the Central Committee of the Washington County Democrats calls on our elected officials in Congress to do whatever is necessary to speed the withdrawal of American military forces from the nation of Iraq.

New Analysis Finds Oregon Hit Hard by Cuts in President’s Budget for 2008

Oregon would lose $123 million in federal funding next year for a wide range of public structures, including K-12 education and Head Start, under the President’s budget for 2008 according to a report released by the Washington, DC-based Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

The funding cuts, scheduled to deepen in future years under the President’s proposal, would force Oregon to either raise taxes to compensate for the lost federal funds, or reduce basic public services.

The analysis prompted criticism of the President’s budget by Governor Kulongoski, advocates for Oregon children, and OCPP.

Read the rest of OCPP's news release, New Analysis Finds Oregon Hit Hard by Cuts in President’s Budget for 2008, including links to the full report and state-by-state tables.

Polite letters to Sen Gordon Smith and Ron Wyden would be especially useful.
