Fruits of Democratic Control: Rainy Day Fund

This past month Oregon finally got the start of a real rainy day fund. Now our schools, police, health care, and other services will be better protected when the inevitable recession occurs. This never got anywhere when the republicans were in control. This is a direct result of all the hard work you and our candidates did to win the majority.

In order to pass, it still required some republican support, thankfully two republicans crossed party lines and supported it. Its a sad commentary that only two were willing to support a more stable funding mechanism, but we can be grateful to all who stood up for Oregon.

The Oregon Predatory Lending Cap – HB 2871
Ending usury in Oregon means ending 500 percent interest loans. Ending usury in Oregon means ending the nightmare for families who, in a desperate effort to pay their bills, take out a loan that leads them deeper into debt.

House Bill 2871, the Oregon Predatory Lending Cap, is the best solution for bringing an end to usury. HB 2871 establishes a 36 percent cap on all consumer loans made by non-depository institutions.
CALL TO ACTION: Our opponents are sparing no expense. You may have seen the TV ads featuring an elderly woman who claims a high interest car title loan saved her life and her dog's life. The TV ad ends by asking viewers to call their lawmakers today.  We cannot match their money but we can match them with phone calls and emails to our lawmakers.
Reducing predatory check cashing fees - HB 2202
Today thousands of Oregon's seniors will receive their Social Security check in the mail. For those without a checking account, as much as 6 to 10 percent will be sliced off the top as a fee for cashing their check at storefront check cashers. That's easy money for a check that carries no risk of bouncing. HB 2202 would make those fees fair and affordable by setting a reasonable cap of 2 percent on government checks and 3 percent on payroll checks. HB 2202 is part of the Governor's package of bills aimed at reducing high-cost financial services.
Visit the web site and click on FACT SHEET to learn more about these bills. www.paydayloanfairness.org
