Will Congress Debate Single Payer?
Breaking news from PNHP. The Weiner amendment 'could' come to a floor vote on Friday or Saturday with maybe a 20 minute debate allowed. Your calls and faxes were instrumental in making this happen.
Now is the time to push hard on your congressperson to vote for the Weiner amendment. Even if it fails, it is very important to show that it has support. If the entire health reform bill fails, as it very well may, then Medicare For All has a real shot at enactment when Congress realizes it MUST address health care.
So send this fax right now to your Congressperson.
You can also send a fax with your own words by clicking here.
There are numerous other faxes that support the Medicare For All idea. Take your pick.
Then call your Congressperson. You can get the phone number here. And call the Congressional bigwigs also. Here are the numbers:
Call Speaker Pelosi: (202) 225-4965
Call Bill Floor Manager Rep. George Miller: (202) 225-2095
Call Bill Floor Manager Rep. Henry Waxman: (202) 225-3976
A Message from Dr. Herman Frankel M.D.
Dear friends:
Phone calls, fax messages, and e-mails from all over the country have made a difference. Again!
I understand from our friends at Physicians for a National Health Plan (pnhp.org) and at HealthJustice (1payer.net) that the Weiner Amendment could come to a floor vote by the House of Representatives on Friday 11/06/09 or Saturday 11/07/09. (The Weiner amendment would replace Division A of HR 3200 with the text of HR 676, the “U.S. National Health Care Act,” sponsored by Rep. John Conyers. This would effectively transform HR 3200 into single-payer legislation.)
Now is the time to call your Representative again – Thursday and Friday – and urge a vote for the Weiner amendment. Even if it fails, it is very important to show that it has support. If the entire health reform bill fails, as it very well may, then Medicare For All has a real shot at enactment when Congress realizes it MUST address health care.

Rep. Earl Blumenauer........ Phone: 503-231-2300........... Fax: 503-235-4005
Rep. Kurt Schrader……… Phone: 503-557-1324……….Fax: 503-557-1921
President Obama…………. See http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/ for e-mail, phone, FAX
Thank you to Speaker Nancy Pelosi: http://www.1payer.net/faxapp/senders/add/cid:40
Let's keep working together!
Warmly, and in solidarity,
Herman

Dear Rep Wu,
Hello from Tigard!
Rep. Anthony Weiner will introduce an amendment to HR 3296 to replace it with a single payer system, Medicare For All -- if he is allowed to as Speaker Pelosi promised. I urge your continued support for HR676 and the Kucinich amendments.
Please refuse to vote for HR3296 until HR676 and the Kucinich amendments have been debated and voted upon.
I want expanded and improved Medicare now - for everybody. Having everybody in Medicare, healthy young and unhealthy old, solves Medicare's financing problem. Paying for health care with payroll and income taxes is cheaper for all of us except for the very richest.
HR 3296 is an unwieldy agglomeration of insurance company protection, tax subsidies for wealthy corporations, and destruction of an already underfunded Medicare. HR 3296 is a contraption that only insurance CEO's can love.
Medicare For All eliminates the 30% overhead we now pay for rationed care and insurance company death panels. The $800 billion saved is more than enough to pay for gold-standard free choice of doctor health care for all Americans.
Please continue to represent the people of the 1st Congressional District, not the insurance companies -- vote for the Weiner amendment and replace HR 3296 with Medicare For All.
Sincerely,
Derrick Duehren

There will be much number-crunching tomorrow, but preliminary numbers (at least in Virginia) show that GOP turnout remained the same as last year, but Democratic turnout collapsed. This is a base problem, and this is what Democrats better take from tonight:
- If you abandon Democratic principles in a bid for unnecessary "bipartisanship", you will lose votes.
- If you water down reform in favor of Blue Dogs and their corporate benefactors, you will lose votes.
- If you forget why you were elected -- health care, financial services, energy policy and immigration reform -- you will lose votes.
Tonight proved conclusively that we're not going to turn out just because you have a (D) next to your name, or because Obama tells us to. We'll turn out if we feel it's worth our time and effort to vote, and we'll work hard to make sure others turn out if you inspire us with bold and decisive action.
The choice is yours. Give us a reason to vote for you, or we sit home. And you aren't going to make up the margins with conservative voters. They already know exactly who they're voting for, and it ain't you.
An Anniversary Message from President Obama
One year ago today, you made history.
We all knew that electing Barack Obama President was only the opportunity to bring about change; that we would all have to keep working to fulfill the promise our victory offered.
And you've come through -- by making hundreds of thousands of calls to Congress to push health reform forward, by pouring your effort into seemingly insurmountable challenges time and again, and, since January, by building on the power of our campaign to create Organizing for America.
And now, with the finish line on health reform in sight, we need your voice more than ever before.
To mark this special day, President Obama just recorded a video for supporters like you -- please watch his message, and sign up to join OFA in your community today.
Thank you so much for fighting so hard and giving so much to make the promise of a stronger, more just and prosperous America in the years ahead a reality:

Lindsey Graham Rebukes Fellow Republicans: "The Green Economy Is Coming" (VIDEO)

Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) chastised his fellow Republicans Wednesday for refusing to deal with climate change and said they needed to see green legislation as something that could help business.
"I am no scientist, but I've ... seen the effects of a warming planet," he said in a press conference. "The green economy is coming. We can either follow or lead. And those countries who follow will pay a price. Those nations who lead in creating the new green economy for the world will make money."
"If you can't participate in solving a hard problem, why are you up here?" he asked.

Italy Convicts Former CIA Agents in Renditions Trial
Derrick: Italy, Spain, and Germany have court proceedings underway against Bush-era crimes. Why is it our great country cannot police its own?
Published on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 by Reuters Link
MILAN - An Italian judge sentenced 23 former CIA agents to up to eight years in prison Wednesday for the abduction of a Muslim cleric in a symbolic ruling against "rendition" flights used by the former U.S. government.
The Americans were all tried in absentia after the United States refused to extradite them. But the verdict, the first of its kind, was welcomed by rights campaigners who have long complained the renditions policy violated basic human rights.
Judge Oscar Magi dropped the case against three Americans, including a former CIA Rome station chief, for the abduction of Egyptian-born cleric Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr, who was snatched off a Milan street in 2003 and flown to Egypt for interrogation.
He also acquitted the former head of Italy's Sismi military intelligence service, Nicolo Pollari, and his former deputy, ruling that evidence against them violated state secrecy rules.
Magi sentenced the former head of the CIA's Milan station, Robert Seldon Lady, to eight years in prison and the other 22 former CIA agents to five years each.
He ruled that those convicted should paid 1 million euros in damages to Nasr, better known as Abu Omar, and 500,000 euros to his wife.
Abu Omar was secretly flown from Aviano airbase in northeast Italy via Ramstein base in Germany to Egypt, where he says he was tortured and held until 2007 without charge.
It is the first case of its kind to contest the practice of "extraordinary rendition" under the administration of former U.S. President George W. Bush, in which terrorism suspects were captured in one country and taken for questioning in another, where interrogation techniques were tougher.
Tests Find Wide Range of Bisphenol-A in Canned Soups, Juice, and More

Consumer Reports' latest tests of canned foods, including soups, juice, tuna, and green beans, have found that almost all of the 19 name-brand foods tested contain measurable levels of Bisphenol A (BPA). The results are reported in the December 2009 issue and also available online. BPA, which has been used for years in clear plastic bottles and food-can liners, has been restricted in Canada and some U.S. states and municipalities because it has been linked to a wide array of health effects including reproductive abnormalities, heightened risk of breast and prostate cancers, diabetes, and heart disease. I've reported on BPA over at Civil Eats here, here, and here.
Federal guidelines currently put the daily upper limit of safe exposure at 50 micrograms of BPA per kilogram of body weight. But that level is based on a handful of experiments done in the 1980s rather than hundreds of more recent animal and laboratory studies indicating that serious health risks could result from much lower doses of BPA. Several animal studies show adverse effects, such as abnormal reproductive development, at exposures of 2.4 micrograms of BPA per kilogram of body weight per day, a dose that could be reached by a child eating one or a few servings daily or an adult daily diet that includes multiple servings of canned foods containing BPA levels comparable to some of the foods Consumer Reports tested.
In keeping with established practices that ensure an adequate margin of safety for human exposure, Consumer Reports' food-safety scientists recommend limiting daily exposure to BPA to one-thousandth of that level (standard safety limit setting practice), or 0.0024 micrograms per kilogram of body weight, significantly lower than FDA's current safety limit.
