Resolution to Oppose Blockade of The Strait of Hormuz to Iran's Ships - Passed September 24, 2008

A RESOLUTION: TO OPPOSE BLOCKADE OF THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ TO IRAN'S SHIPS

WHEREAS, a blockade of a nation's access to international waters is an act of war, and
WHEREAS, Iran and the United States share many common interests, including a stable state of Iraq, which is no threat to its neighbors,
NOW THEREFORE, we call upon you, our Senators and Representatives, to:

  1. Oppose any Presidential action such as blockage of the Strait of Hormuz that could be construed as impinging on the sovereign rights of Iran.
  2. Require that the President use true diplomacy to pursue common interests and seek peaceful resolution of hostilities with Iran.

Explanation of above resolution:

Both House and Senate have versions of resolutions to support tightening sanctions against Iran. HCR 362 is stalled in the House and is not expected to go forward. No Oregon Representatives are supoorters. SR 530 is still being considered. Sen. Gordon Smith is a chief sponsor, and Sen. Ron Wyden has signed on, as well.

Congress should not support the Administration, which may be using the Iran issue to raise fear for political reasons. Bush may welcome an Iran defensive action to justify a military attack. Calling or writing our senators would be helpful, as well as supporting the above resolution.
