You Can Help

Keep on Knocking!

The 100° days of summer are finally behind us, so canvassing is easier than ever. Our band of volunteers is knocking on doors harder than ever, talking to voters about my campaign and hearing their views on issues facing Metro. Door-to-door is the most effective way to win votes, and we’d love to cover even more territory than we’re doing now. We have several group canvass events scheduled in October. Come spend a couple of hours, meet friendly neighbors, and help me get more votes. To sign up for a canvass opportunity in October, call us at 503-352-9769 or use the handy form on my website.

Want something in your yard this fall besides leaves?

Yep, it’s getting to be lawn sign time again, and the Kathryn for Metro campaign will be setting up lawn signs just as we did in the Primary. If you’ve got the space (especially in higher traffic locations) to put up a sign displaying your support or want to help distribute signs to others, email Wesley Jones (Wesley@HarringtonForMetro.com) and we’ll get you set up! And if you can talk to a neighbor or two with a nice location or a corner lot, you’ll help me get even more exposure.

Phone Out the Vote!

Around the time ballots are mailed out (October 24), we’ll be ramping up our telephone outreach with a series of phone banking evenings. The first-time phone bank volunteers from the Primary will tell you how easy and fun – yes, fun – it is to do. Voters appreciate contact from real, live people. Sign up for a couple of hours and help me achieve a rousing victory!

We have additional times available weekday evenings and afternoons, most days of the week. For more information contact info@HarringtonForMetro.com or call us at 503-352-9769.

This newsletter will be sent twice a month during the campaign season. The main purpose of this is to keep you updated with the events and volunteer needs of our candidates. One of the best ways of helping our candidates is to help them in their efforts to directly contact voters. It is so important, especially for a race like state representative which is small enough that you can have a real impact. Please review the calendars below and help out where you can. It doesn't matter if the candidate is in your district or not, if you are free and they need help, please volunteer.

Oregon House Democrats : Our Pledge for the 2007 Legislature

"Oregon needs real solutions to make health care more affordable, create good jobs, rebuild our education system and make government more accountable to the people of this state. A new direction for Oregon means new leadership, and Democrats will lead by putting people over politics." -- State Representative Jeff Merkley, the Democratic Leader.

Democrats will move Oregon forward right away by putting kids first.

Healthy Kids

Health insurance for children is a moral obligation. Democrats will extend health care to every child in Oregon who isn’t otherwise covered by federal or private health plans.

Strong Schools

Democrats will commit in 2007 to nothing less than a full 175-day school year and smaller class sizes in every district of the state. We will expand access to Head Start and work toward the goal of enrolling all eligible children so they are ready to learn when they enter Kindergarten.

Democrats are committed to specific first steps to bring medical costs under control.

Affordable Prescription Drugs

We’ll reduce prescription drug costs by allowing individuals and small businesses to benefit from the state’s bulk purchasing power.

Health Insurance Stability

We will hold the health insurance industry accountable by requiring them to submit all rate increases to a state oversight board and then justify them before they are approved.

Democrats will act quickly to keep our families and our neighborhoods safe from current threats.

Preventing Internet Predators

We will make it a crime to solicit minors over the Internet, and we’ll work with the Attorney General to provide more tools to help parents keep their kids safe in cyberspace.

Preventing Identity Theft

We will empower Oregonians to freeze their credit if their identity is stolen so criminals can’t use their victim’s good name to open fraudulent accounts. We will also require companies who store and use that information to report immediately any breach in security so consumers can protect themselves.

Sexual Assault Victims' Rights

We will protect the rights and privacy of victims of sexual assault by guaranteeing access to emergency contraceptives.

Combating the Meth Epidemic

We will hire an additional 100 state troopers to combat the meth epidemic and make our roads and highways safer.

Democrats will create a healthy business environment to attract good jobs and investment to Oregon.

Biofuels and the Rural Economy

Oregon has the potential to become a national leader in alternative energy innovation. We will create more job opportunities in rural Oregon while reducing our dependence on fossil fuels by jumpstarting the alternative and biofuels industry.

Higher Ed and High Tech Investments

We will step up investments in our universities and community colleges, bringing more biotechnology and high tech firms to Oregon.

Democrats will create a smarter and more accountable state government.

Cutting Government Waste

We will require the Secretary of State to audit the performance of state agencies, so we know where your tax dollars are being put to good use – and where they’re not. We will also require a regular review of the corporate tax code to find and eliminate waste and loopholes.

Government Accountability

We’ll close the revolving door that allows legislators to turn public service into personal gain by restricting them from lobbying their former colleagues within two years after they leave office.

Monroe Sweetland, prominent Democrat

Political force - The former Oregon legislator was an advocate for civil rights and education

Tuesday, September 12, 2006

DAVE HOGAN

The Oregonian

Monroe Sweetland, a patriarch of Democratic Party politics known for his advocacy for education and civil rights, died late Sunday in a Milwaukie residential care facility. He was 96.

Sweetland was a walking history book of Oregon and national politics. Photos on the walls of his home showed him with Eleanor Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey.

The former Oregon legislator and newspaper publisher left his mark through efforts such as transforming Portland State University into a full-fledged urban university and helping to lower the voting age from 21 to 18.

A memorial service will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 30 in the ballroom of PSU's Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 355, 1825 S.W. Broadway, Portland.

Sweetland was a revered figure among Democratic leaders. Callers and visitors checking on Sweetland in his final weeks included Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, the U.S. Senate Democratic leader; New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson; and Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski.

"He is probably -- as much as anyone -- the father of the modern Democratic Party of Oregon," said Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore.

Born in Salem on Jan. 20, 1910, Sweetland grew up in Oregon and Michigan, then graduated from Wittenburg College in Ohio. He met his future wife, Lillie, while attending law school at Syracuse and Cornell universities. They married in 1931.

In the 1930s, Sweetland started out as a socialist, then became involved in Democratic politics. Returning to Oregon after World War II, he was elected to the Democratic National Committee in 1948. He bought the Oregon Democrat magazine in 1949, then bought three weekly newspapers: the Molalla Pioneer, Milwaukie Review and Newport News.

Oregon's top elected offices were controlled by Republicans at the time, but Sweetland helped lead a Democratic resurgence as a postwar boom brought an influx of Democrats into the state. By 1957, Democrats held the offices of governor, House speaker, Senate president, both U.S. Senate seats, and three of the state's four U.S. House seats.

Elected to the Oregon House in 1952, Sweetland became the first Democrat to win a House seat in Clackamas County in two decades. He served 10 years in the Legislature, winning a Senate seat in 1954 and 1958. He unsuccessfully ran for secretary of state in 1956 and 1960.

In the mid-1960s, Sweetland's career shifted beyond Oregon. He moved to San Mateo, Calif., and became the National Education Association's political director for 13 Western states. He initiated what became the Bilingual Education Act of 1968, which provided federal money to encourage school districts to try approaches such as teaching English as a second language.

Sweetland enlisted the support of key senators, said Reynaldo Martinez, who worked with Sweetland at the NEA and went on to serve as Sen. Reid's chief of staff for 16 years.

"It was landmark legislation as far as Latinos are concerned," Martinez said. "The Bilingual Education Act changed the lives of so many Latino youngsters."

Sweetland's daughter, Barbara Sweetland Smith, said he considered the act "the most important thing he ever did."

Colleagues said Sweetland stood out for his compassion for all people, regardless of skin color. He was a vocal critic of the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II and is credited with helping build support for a civil rights bill passed by the Oregon Legislature in 1953 -- after 17 civil rights bills had died in Salem.

Sweetland retired from the NEA in 1975, but he remained in California for another 20 years. His wife of 53 years, Lillie, died there in 1985.

He returned to Oregon in the mid-1990s. He also kept up his interest in politics, running unsuccessfully for the Oregon House in 1998.

Often traveling by bus in his final years, he carried voter registration cards with him, encouraging people to get involved.

"I'm sure he registered hundreds of people," said Fred Neal, a retired state elections official.

Surviving are Sweetland's daughters, Barbara Sweetland Smith of Anchorage and Rebecca Sweetland of Lake Oswego; three granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

At his request, Sweetland's body is being donated to Oregon Health & Science University for research.

His family asks that remembrances be contributions to the Monroe Sweetland Scholarship at PSU. Checks, payable to the PSU Foundation, can be mailed to P.O. Box 243, Portland, OR 97207, with Sweetland Scholarship written on the memo line.
