WASHINGTON COUNTY DEMOCRATS REORGANIZATION MEETING

The Organizational Meeting will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2006 at 10:00 am and the Beaverton Library. During that meeting, officers and delegates to both the State Central Committee and the First District Committee will be elected. To streamline the process, the Nominating Committee is accepting names of folks who want to run for any of those positions. The offices are President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. There will be at least seven delegates and seven alternates elected for each committee. If you are interested in one of these positions, please contact one of the members of the Nominating Committee:

Bill Kroger: krogerb@verizon.net

Jennifer Warren: jwhr80@yahoo.com

Al Peck:

alpeck1@verizon.net

Alice Bartelt: alicebartelt@comcast.net.

Nominations will still be taken from the floor, but having names beforehand will give members of the County Central Committee time to learn about the nominees, and will allow the meeting to proceed at a faster pace.

King City Democrats

The November meeting of the King City Democrats will be a program discussing the results of the election of November 7th.  The date is Friday, November 10, 2006, at 7 p.m. in the King City Town Hall, 15245 SW 116th Avenue, King City.

 The results of the election for precinct 419 (King City) and the precincts of Tigard comprising House District 35 will be presented, with the discussion led by Ellie Burch, House District 35 Leader.  Although the election will not have been certified by the date of this meeting, the available figures will be compiled representing how each precinct voted.

Jennifer Warren will also discuss Medicare Part D and how the timeline of November 15th will affect the ability to have this coverage.

 The King City Democrats meet regularly each month to gather together with others who support similar progressive views.  Refreshments are served and there is an opportunity to socialize.  We encourage all interested persons to join our active group at the monthly meetings the second Friday of each month.  All ages are invited to attend.  Yearly dues are $5.00.  For information, call Joan McMahon, 503-639-6051.

Help Our Candidates!

One of the best ways of helping our candidates is to help them in their efforts to directly contact voters. It is so important, especially for a race like state representative which is small enough that you can have a real impact. Please review the calendars below and help out where you can. It doesn't matter if the candidate is in your district or not, if you are free and they need help, please volunteer.

Ted Kulongoski for Governor

Ted Proves He's On Your Side in KGW Debate

Tuesday, Governor Kulongoski again made clear why he is the right choice in this election.  Meeting Ron Saxton in a debate hosted by KGW & The Oregonian and carried statewide on Northwest Cable News, Ted told the audience:

Ron Saxton and I fundamentally disagree with who a governor should represent.  I believe a governor should represent the working people of the state, consumers, seniors, children.  Ron believes that in fact the governor should represent the corporate elite, the privileged elite.

Ted offered straight answers, pledging that neither he nor his staff would accept any gifts from lobbyists, he would bring more tax fairness to the state by making corporations pay their fair share and he reinforced his commitment to his clean cars initiative to combat global warming and reduce air pollution. Saxton refused to endorse any of those commitments.

You can check out the debate online here (click on the "raw tab" of the Video Center).

Wednesday, October 25th - Portland

Lunch With Al Gore and Gov. Kulongoski

Ted & Al share a commitment to stemming global warming. Ron Saxton shares Bush's view that it's not even a problem. Your contribution will ensure that Ted and the environment are winners on November 7th!

Save The Date - Thursday, Nov. 2nd!

Democrats Unite For Statewide Ballot Party Night

The Democratic Party is better organized than ever and on Nov. 2nd, we're going to prove it with the biggest night of ballot parties yet!

Plus, let's face it, a lot of ballot initiatives are random and often confusing.  Host an event to pull friends and neighbors together to hash out the issues and increase voter turn-out.

More details will follow, but you can check-out our nifty online organizing tool and create your event today at:

http://www.Democrats.org/OregonBallotParties

Rubberstamp Ron and Truth Rarely Meet

Ron Saxton is running a typical morally bankrupt, despicable Karl Rove Republican campaign.  See if this cycle seems familiar to you:

  • Step 1:  Avoid public events - spend time courting millions from polluters, opponents of minimum wage increases, millionaires looking for more personal and corporate hand-outs.
  • Step 2:  Lie as much as possible in a barrage of misleading and patently false television ads.

  • Step 3:  Scapegoat a minority group to enflame the right wing 'nuts' (their words not ours) in your party.

  • Step 4:  Make big promises with no specifics or ability whatsoever to back them up.
  • Step 5:  When caught red handed, deny responsibility for or knowledge of all past actions or statements.
  • Step 6:  Do everything possible to depress turn-out and hope Democrats stay home.

Eugene Register Guard Endorses Gov. Kulongoski

Governor Kulongoski shares the priorities of Oregonians and people across this country: good schools, access to affordable health care, and energy independence.  And you can trust him to protect  Oregon 's National Guard and active duty military by demanding accountability in Iraq from George Bush and Republicans in Congress.

Larry Galizio - HD35

Parsons campaign attacks
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Shirley Parsons campaign recently questioned Larry’s vote against House Bill 2009 and House Bill 3460. You might have noticed the fliers.
Please read the following information about these bills, so that you can decide for yourself whether you would be happy to see them as laws.
The Grandparents Attack
Larry believes that we can't legislate family values. HB 2009 would have tied judges' hands, rather than allow cases to be examined on an individual basis.
Children placed for adoption by the Department of Human Services often have special needs, and many of them were taken out of abusive family environments. Clearly, we need more scrutiny, not less, when we find these children safe homes.
The School Funding Attack
House Speaker Karen Minnis was the chief sponsor of HB 3460, a K-12 school funding bill. Larry voted against the bill in favor of an alternative (HB 3498) that would have allowed schools higher funding levels and a more stable economic base.
There were several key reasons why Larry chose to vote against HB 3460. Consider the following points:
  • The bill’s funding mechanism is the personal income tax, over-reliance on which is arguably the source of Oregon’s volatile tax structure
  • The bill eliminates corporate tax support for schools, thus dividing two interdependent Oregon communities that should remain mutually supportive
  • The bill cuts education spending to the lowest level it has ever been in the post-WW II era
In stark contrast, the bill for which Larry advocated was based on the Quality Education Model enacted by the Oregon legislature in 2001. HB 3498 would have set funding minimums – not spending caps – on education funding. And rather than attach funding to a single source, it would have allowed the legislature flexibility to fund the State Schools Fund from other sources on which it had voted and deemed necessary.
In the last legislative session, Larry fought for education. He will continue to do so.
David Edwards - HD30
David Edward's Volunteer Opportunities
As you all know, this election is going to be BIG.  Not only are there several very exciting measures on the ballot this year, there is a very real possiblity that the results of the upcoming 2006 election will make history.
As you know, if elected, David Edwards will be the first Democrat ever to win this historically Republican seat in the State House.   So over the next 16 days we're doing everything we can to ensure that our supporters a.) received their ballots and more importantly b.) mail them in; so that their votes can be counted this very important election year.
Your help is critical to getting David elected so that he can make his way to Salem to break through the partisan gridlock.
We'll be making calls (every day) and going door-to-door (on weekends) to simply remind our neighbors to send in their ballots -- until Election Day, Nov. 7.
Jeff Barker - HD28
Thanks to everyone who helped me with my campaign.  We are doing fine as we approach election day.  Please lend that last minute help to Washington County campaigns like Larry Galizio or Chuck Riley.  In these final days we will see the negative, misleading ads from the Republican Party, that seem to work against us.  Let us be sure they do not fool the public this time.  Please encourage all your friends to be sure to VOTE.  Let's take back the HOUSE!
Harrington for Metro
You Can Help
Keep on Knocking!
The 100° days of summer are finally behind us, so canvassing is easier than ever. Our band of volunteers is knocking on doors harder than ever, talking to voters about my campaign and hearing their views on issues facing Metro. Door-to-door is the most effective way to win votes, and we’d love to cover even more territory than we’re doing now. We have several group canvass events scheduled in October. Come spend a couple of hours, meet friendly neighbors, and help me get more votes. To sign up for a canvass opportunity in October, call us at 503-352-9769 or use the handy form on my website.
Phone Out the Vote!
Around the time ballots are mailed out (October 24), we’ll be ramping up our telephone outreach with a series of phone banking evenings. The first-time phone bank volunteers from the Primary will tell you how easy and fun – yes, fun – it is to do. Voters appreciate contact from real, live people. Sign up for a couple of hours and help me achieve a rousing victory!
We have additional times available weekday evenings and afternoons, most days of the week. For more information contact info@HarringtonForMetro.com or call us at 503-352-9769.
The Oregon Food Bank is the latest organization to come out against Measures 41 and 48.
Read their latest newsletter opposing these dangerous measures:
http://www.oregonfoodbank.org/research_and_action/legislative_update/documents/Oct2006.pdf
At our last meeting, the Washington County Democrats voted to oppose Measures 41 and 48 because they would lead to huge cuts in state funding and hurt working families.   These are two complicated measures that are funded from out of state millionaires who don’t have a stake in our state’s future.  They will gut vital public services and do nothing to increase accountability in government.
Ballot Measure 41 would cut $151 million this year. And it just gets worse.  In the 2007-2009 budget cycle Measure 41 cuts almost $800 million from the budget – 90% of which goes to fund schools, health care, senior services and public safety.  Measure 41 is another false promise and will have a boomerang effect on working families.  When services are cut, Oregonians will end up paying more in increased fees and hidden costs.
Ballot Measure 48 would insert a flawed formula into Oregon’s Constitution. Based on a law that devastated Colorado, Measure 48 has been bankrolled by New York developer, Howard Rich. Measure 48 would cut at least $2.2 billion from the 2007-2009 budget.  The Measure is so poorly written and confusing that it may even be retroactive. Coloradans learned the hard way.  After 13 years under the same flawed formula, Colorado now ranks 49th in K-12 education funding, 48th in funding for higher education and dead last in vaccination rates for children.
Help the WashCo Dems defend Oregon against the out-of-state special interests.  Visit www.defendoregon.org.  Vote NO on Measures 41 and 48.
